Back-to-School Chess Showdown: 50 Players Battle It Out at Flying Minds!

The chessboards were buzzing, the clocks were ticking, and 50 young chess players came together at the Flying Minds Education Centre for an exciting Back-to-School Rated Chess Tournament, hosted in collaboration with CJCC (Calgary Junior Chess Club).

With three sections—Beginner, Intermediate, and Open—and a fast-paced 20-minute + 5-second increment rapid format, players faced five rounds of competitive chess, putting their tactical vision, calculation, opening knowledge, positional understanding, and endgame technique to the test.

It was more than a tournament. For many young players, it was an opportunity to experience the excitement of competitive rated chess, challenge themselves against new opponents, and discover just how much they have improved.

50 Players. 5 Rounds. One Chessboard at a Time.

From the opening moves to the final endgames, the tournament delivered exactly what competitive chess should: pressure, concentration, creativity, and plenty of fighting spirit.

The 20/5 rapid time control gave players enough time to calculate combinations and develop meaningful plans while keeping the games moving at an exciting pace. Across five rounds, players navigated opening principles, tactical motifs, pawn structures, exchanges, attacks, defensive resources, and complicated endgames.

The tournament ran smoothly from beginning to end, allowing players to focus on what mattered most—their next move.

For parents, it was equally rewarding. Many were thrilled to watch their children step up to the board, manage the pressure of tournament play, shake hands with opponents, and confidently put their chess knowledge into practice.

Celebrating Our Section Champions

After five rounds of intense competition, three players emerged at the top of each section.

Beginner Section

🥇 1st Place — Hamel, Yasser

🥈 2nd Place — Jang, Jason

🥉 3rd Place — Chhatwal, Ridayveer Singh

For our beginner players, the tournament was an important introduction to competitive chess. Every game provided an opportunity to practice board vision, piece development, tactical awareness, and the fundamentals of tournament play.

Intermediate Section

🥇 1st Place — Singh, Sunder

🥈 2nd Place — Barman, Maanvi

🥉 3rd Place — Yao, Vincent

The intermediate section brought another level of complexity to the boards, with players demonstrating stronger calculation, tactical combinations, positional plans, and greater awareness of their opponents' threats.

Open Section

🥇 1st Place — Zhang, Finley

🥈 2nd Place — Verma, Audvik

🥉 3rd Place — Venkatesha, Shlok

The Open section showcased some of the strongest chess of the day, with players battling through sharp tactical positions, strategic middlegames, and difficult endgames where a single tempo could make the difference.

Behind Every Great Tournament Is a Great Team

A tournament of this size takes teamwork, preparation, and plenty of coordination.

The event was directed by Flying Minds Coach Bijan D. Shafa, serving as Head Tournament Director, with Priyanka and Felix, along with several helpful parents, contributing their time and energy to keep everything running smoothly.

A special thank you also goes to Alex Nguyen, the tournament organizer, for helping bring the event together and creating another opportunity for young players to experience competitive rated chess.

And of course, we’re grateful to CJCC for continuing to collaborate with Flying Minds and help create opportunities for Calgary chess players to compete and grow.

More Than a Tournament

What makes these events special isn't simply who finishes first.

It's watching a beginner play their first serious tournament game.

It's seeing an intermediate player recognize a tactical pattern they've been practicing in class.

It's watching an advanced player calculate several variations under time pressure.

And it's seeing parents realize that the skills their children develop across the chessboard—patience, calculation, decision-making, resilience, and problem-solving—extend far beyond chess.

Every tournament is another step in that journey.

What's Next at Flying Minds?

The tournament may be over, but the chess doesn't stop!

Many of our young players are already looking forward to the return of the Flying Minds Chess Social every Friday, where kids can hang out, play casual games, practice their skills, solve puzzles, and enjoy chess with friends in a relaxed environment.

Flying Minds also continues to offer regular chess classes from Tuesday through Friday, with programs designed for all skill levels, from beginners learning the fundamentals to advanced players developing their tournament game.

And that's not all—regular chess workshops and special events will continue throughout the year, giving students even more opportunities to sharpen their skills and learn from new challenges.

The Next Move Is Already Being Planned
