Why FIRST LEGO League Matters: Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators with Flying Minds
In today’s rapidly evolving world, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are more than just school subjects—they are the foundation for the future. The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a global competition that brings STEM to life for students aged 6 to 16, combining hands-on learning, critical thinking, and teamwork in an exciting and meaningful way.
At Flying Minds Education Centre, we are proud to be part of this inspiring movement by preparing young minds to take part in the FIRST LEGO League. Whether your child is just beginning their STEM journey or ready to dive into complex engineering challenges, our programs are designed to guide them every step of the way.
What Is FIRST LEGO League?

FIRST LEGO League is not your average robotics competition. Students are challenged to:
Research a real-world problem related to an annual theme,
Design and build a LEGO robot to complete missions on a game board,
Collaborate as a team to present their innovation and technical solutions.
The 2025-26 season theme, "UNEARTHED," focuses on uncovering the past and learning how innovation can reveal hidden knowledge. It invites students to think like archaeologists, engineers, and explorers—all while having fun with LEGO and robotics.
The program is divided into age-based divisions:
Explore Division (Grades 2–4) – introducing core STEM concepts and teamwork through guided model-building and poster presentations.
Challenge Division (Grades 4–8) – where students tackle real-world issues with full robotic builds, coding, and innovative projects.
Why FIRST LEGO League Is Important in Modern STEM Education
FLL fosters more than just technical skills. It helps children develop:
Creative problem-solving
Teamwork and communication
Project management and leadership
Confidence in public speaking
A love for learning and innovation
In a world where tomorrow’s jobs don’t even exist yet, FLL prepares students to become adaptable, forward-thinking leaders who thrive in any field.
How Flying Minds Prepares Students for Success

At Flying Minds, our robotics programs are built on a foundation of "learning by playing"—the same philosophy that drives FIRST LEGO League. Here's how we support our teams:
Hands-on LEGO Robotics Classes for ages 6–12
Dedicated FIRST LEGO League Teams for both Explore and Challenge divisions
Structured Curriculum aligned with FLL standards
Experienced Coaches and Mentors to guide students in building, coding, and presenting
Team-Building Activities and Strategy Workshops to foster collaboration
Participation in local Calgary-area competitions and events
By joining our robotics club, your child will not only learn how to build and program robots, but also develop essential life skills and a passion for discovery.
