A Unique Chess Experience in the Heart of Nature
With 21 players battling it out in a single, highly competitive Open section, the tournament showcased focus, resilience, and tactical brilliance. The format was 10 minutes with a 10-second increment—fast-paced enough to keep the games intense yet balanced to allow for deep thinking.
Despite being outdoors, the tournament ran smoothly over five exciting rounds. Well-timed pairings, respectful sportsmanship, and seamless organization marked the day. Parents looked on proudly as their children competed seriously and thrived in the joyful, nature-filled atmosphere.
Beyond the Board: Fun, Friendship & Festivities
Between rounds, children enjoyed a break that’s just not possible in a typical indoor event. They ran through open fields, kicked around a soccer ball, and even participated in face painting courtesy of our talented art teacher. The energy was high, and laughter echoed throughout. The tournament became more than just a competition; it was a celebration of community and childhood.
To keep everyone fueled and refreshed, we provided small snacks and drinks. This kept players energized for each round of mental warfare. The combination of chess and outdoor fun made this tournament an instant favorite among both kids and parents.

And the Winners Are…
After a day filled with sharp tactics, cool heads, and creative play, the final standings were impressive:
🏆 1st Place (5 points):
Diyas Iskander
🥈 2nd Place (4 points):
Sienna Vu
Phong Nguyen
Gordon Li
Each of these players walked away with 3D printed trophies and valuable rated experience that will serve them well in future tournaments.
A Huge Thank You
A big thank you goes to the wonderful parents who helped bring this tournament to life—your time, effort, and support were key to its success. We’re incredibly grateful for everything you did to make the day run smoothly!
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to CJCC (Calgary Junior Chess Club) for their continued support and for supplying all tournament boards and clocks.
A Few Reviews: Community Reflections

From the moment we registered, everything was clearly communicated. We received a detailed confirmation, a helpful reminder email before the event, a Google Maps link for the location, and even a contact number for assistance. These thoughtful touches made a significant difference.

During the tournament, we appreciated the team's attentiveness to all players. They ensured that those still playing had a quiet environment while gently guiding the children who had already finished to prevent crowding. This level of care is something we haven’t seen at other tournaments.

While there was a minor technical hiccup regarding score recording, I believe having both players sign off on the results after each game would solve this issue in the future.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks for organizing such a well-run tournament. This was my child’s fifth chess tournament in Calgary, and it was the first time we were truly impressed by the level of care and professionalism in the event's organization.
