Lillie Hughes
Hello! My name is Lillie Hughes, and I am the English Teacher at Flying Minds. I have always had a strong love for reading and writing, which inspired me to pursue an English degree. I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts in English.
Throughout my education, I explored children’s books, young adult novels, classic literature, and everything in between, focusing on classic literary devices and broader connections to history, culture, and society. Literature not only teaches valuable lessons, but by engaging with it, people gain the power of connection. Not just a connection with the text, but with people. In a literal sense, studying literature teaches the ability to communicate both in writing and verbally. However, literature also connects people across different times, cultures, languages, and experiences.
The ability to read and write is a critical part of a child’s journey into adulthood. Through our classes, we will work to develop essential reading and writing skills, as well as expand our knowledge and thought processes. I will encourage creative thinking so that students can engage with source material in a challenging manner.
Your student may not be the biggest bookworm, but my hope is that they carry the tools and critical thinking skills from our class throughout the rest of their professional and personal lives. My goal for this class is for your child to leave with developed skills in reading and writing, both creatively and critically, and to develop an appreciation for English Language Arts.
