How to avoid anxiety learning math and improve math skills.

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

Learning math can cause anxiety in students for a variety of reasons. One reason is that math often requires the ability to think abstractly, which can be difficult for some students. Additionally, math often involves learning a large amount of information and rules, which can be overwhelming for some students.

Another reason is that math often taught in a way that emphasizes memorization and the ability to perform calculations quickly, rather than understanding the underlying concepts. This can lead to students feeling like they are expected to know math facts and procedures without truly understanding why they work.

Furthermore, for some students, their past experiences with math can influence their anxiety levels, if they previously failed or didn't perform well in math, it can create a self-fulfilling prophecy where they believe they cannot perform well in math and as result can cause them to feel anxious. It's important to note that some level of anxiety is normal when learning new things, but excessive anxiety can interfere with a student's ability to learn and can be harmful to their overall well-being.

There are several ways to improve understanding of math and to avoid anxiety:

  1. Practice: doing math problems is the best way to become proficient in it.

  2. Break it down: math can seem daunting when viewed as a whole, breaking down problems into smaller, manageable parts can make it easier to understand.

  3. Use visual aids: visual aids such as graphs, diagrams, and pictures can help to make abstract concepts more concrete and understandable.

  4. Get interactive: using math learning apps, playing math games, or solving puzzles can also be a great way to improve math understanding.

  5. Learn actively: Try to relate math with real world scenarios, make connections between different concepts and try to understand how math is useful in the world around you.

  6. Seek help: if there is a specific area of math that you are struggling with, consider seeking the help of a teacher or tutor.

Additional help in mathematics can improve results in school because it allows students to better understand the material being taught. Often, students may struggle with certain concepts or problem-solving methods, which can make it difficult for them to keep up with the rest of the class. Additional help, whether it be from a tutor, a teacher, or a peer, can provide students with the individualized attention and instruction they need to grasp these concepts and develop the skills necessary to succeed in math. Additionally, it also allows students to gain confidence in their abilities, which can lead to improved motivation and performance.
